Artificial Heart – An Overview

July 2, 2018 by Jeff Montenegro Leave a Comment

An artificial heart is used as temporary heart during a heart surgery as well as permanent replacement when heart transplantation is not an option. This however, is not a permanent solution. The present record for utilizing an artificial heart in humans is 17 months. This engineered substitution for a natural mammalian heart (normally human), stays one of the long-looked for objectives of present day medicine.

In spite of the fact that the heart is reasonably a basic organ (essentially a muscle that capacities as a pump), it typifies complex nuances that oppose clear copying utilizing engineered materials and power supplies. The clear advantage of a practical artificial heart is bring down the requirement for heart transplants, in light of the fact that the interest for giver hearts extraordinarily surpasses supply.

Artificial Heart Design

There have been 13 artificial heart designs that have been used on patients up to now. However, the SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart (TAH) is the only one to receive commercial approval in the U.S., Canada and Europe. The TAH has been in clinical use for more than 35 years, and has been implanted more than 1,900 times, which accounts to more than 650 patient-years of support.

There are two kinds of TAH utilized as bridge to transplant:

  • 70cc TAH is as of now affirmed as an extension to heart transplant for patients who are in danger of up and coming passing from biventricular failure.
  • 50cc TAH is accessible as a feature of an investigational study for patients whose bodies are excessively little to fit the 70cc ventricles.
